How did it all started....
Before Christ Fellowship Church was established, some of the pioneer members of this church were attending Davao Chinese Baptist church. The services were in Chinese and translated into English or vice versa. Singing was also a combination of chinese and English . This did not appeal to these people since most of them belonged to the younger generation of Chinese-Filipinos who preferred English preaching and singing. Moreover, some of them were married to Filipinos.
In 1994, three Chinese businessmen were having a weekly prayer meeting along Sta. Ana Ave. here in Davao City. In one of their prayer meetings, one of them shared his burden to reach out to the younger generation of Chinese-Filipinos who were not fluent in chinese. It turned out that that was also the desire of the rest of them. So, they earnestly prayed that someday they could have a church for this younger generation of Chinese-Filipinos where the preaching and singing would be in English.
Later, a Southern Baptist missionary friend by the name of Rev. Broughton introduced to this Chinese group another Southern Baptist pastor. He was Rev. Philip Griggs. He was assigned here in Davao to do church planting. Rev. Philip Griggs later joined this Chinese group for prayer meetings every week.
As the days passed, their burden to put up a church for the younger generation of Chinese-Filipinos in Davao grew stronger. In God’s time, the group finally pushed through with its plan. The first worship service was held at Ladislawa Garden Village Clubhouse in June 1995. Rev. Philip Griggs was invited to be its first pastor. On July 31 of the same year, we had our first baptism ceremony.
Eventually, because of the English services, CFC has also attracted people from other ethnic groups. At present, our congregation is composed of Chinese, Filipinos, Americans, Koreans, Germans, Indians, and many more – truly a glimpse of the worship service that we will have in heaven someday.
Through the years, CFC has been privileged to be used by God to reach out to many lost souls with the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ and to disciple them in His ways. All glory to God!
